History & significance

The largest Buddhist temple complex in Malaysia, terraced up Penang Hill around the Ban Po Thar pagoda — Chinese octagonal base, Thai middle tiers, Burmese crown: three Buddhist worlds in one tower, mirroring Penang's port cosmopolitanism. The 36.5 m bronze Kuan Yin and Lunar New Year illumination of tens of thousands of lamps are Penang institutions.

The founding abbot chose Air Itam's hills for their resemblance to a crane spreading wings over water — geomancy and refuge combined: 'Kek Lok' is the Pure Land, Sukhavati, promised within sight of the migrant harbour below.
