Myanmar's most venerated image: the seated Mahamuni, carried over the mountains from Arakan (Mrauk-U) as war booty in 1785 — an act that still shapes Rakhine memory. Male devotees have applied so much gold leaf that the body lies under 15 cm of lumpy gold; each dawn a senior monk washes the image's face and brushes its teeth before crowds, the country's most intimate daily rite.
The Buddha himself, visiting Arakan, is said to have breathed life onto the casting — 'my brother' he called it, promising it would remain to represent him for five thousand years; only the face is left ungilded, kept mirror-bright by the morning ablutions.
