History & significance

The newest great temple of the Hindu world, raised at Rama's traditional birthplace after the Supreme Court's 2019 verdict and consecrated in January 2024 with the Pran Pratishtha of Ram Lalla (sculpted by Arun Yogiraj). Built without structural steel in classical Nagara idiom by the hereditary Sompura architect family, it has transformed Ayodhya into one of the most-visited pilgrimage cities in India.

Sthala katha — the legend

Ayodhya, city of the Ikshvaku suryavanshis on the Sarayu, is the stage of the Ramayana's opening and close — from Rama's birth in Chaitra to his return from Lanka lit by lamps, remembered every Deepotsav when the ghats hold lakhs of diyas.
