ശബരിമല
Sabarimala, Periyar hills, Kerala · 9.4346°, 77.0814°
One of the largest annual pilgrimages on earth — tens of millions in the Mandala–Makaravilakku season — reached only on foot through forest after a 41-day vratham of austerity. Pilgrims of all castes and faiths climb the 18 golden steps; the shrine is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board.
Ayyappa, born of Shiva and Vishnu-as-Mohini, was raised by the Pandalam king; sent for tiger's milk, he returned riding a tigress, then merged into the deity here after slaying Mahishi. On Makara Sankranti the Makarajyoti light appearing thrice on the Ponnambalamedu ridge draws the season's greatest gathering.
Trek from Pamba (~5 km); base via Nilackal; seasonal opening.
