Crowning the 300 m hill above Dal Lake, the stone shrine — reached by 243 steps — surveys all Srinagar. Kashmiri tradition ties the hill to Adi Shankara's stay during his digvijaya, when Kashmir's Shaiva and Shakta schools tested and embraced him; the hill is also called Takht-e-Suleiman in Persianate memory.
Here, tradition says, Shankara — champion of the formless — was confronted by a Shakta householder's riddle and conceded the power of the Goddess, composing the Saundarya Lahari's opening: 'Shiva without Shakti cannot even stir.'
