The only one of Murugan's six abodes on the seashore, its sanctum carved partly into the living rock beside the Gulf of Mannar. Uniquely, the gopuram stands to the west rather than over the eastern sea entrance. The Dutch East India Company looted the utsava idols in 1646; their storm-forced return is part of temple lore.
Here Murugan encamped before the great battle with the asura Surapadman; the defeated demon, split in two, became his peacock mount and rooster banner — the war re-enacted every Skanda Sashti with vast crowds.
