Yamunotri (3,293 m), Uttarakhand · 31.0140°, 78.4600°
Westernmost of the Chota Char Dham, source-shrine of the Yamuna beneath the Bandarpunch massif. Pilgrims cook rice in cloth bundles in the boiling Surya Kund spring and carry it home as prasad; the Divya Shila rock pillar is honoured before the goddess herself.
Yamuna is daughter of Surya and sister of Yama, lord of death — bathing in her waters is said to spare one a tortured death, and on Bhai Dooj her devotion to her brother is honoured across India.
6 km trek from Janki Chatti (via Barkot).
