History & significance

The Sun God's chariot rendered as architecture: twelve pairs of three-metre carved wheels — each a working sundial — drawn by seven horses, facing the eastern sea. European mariners steered by the 'Black Pagoda' for centuries. The main sanctum tower collapsed in stages; even truncated, Konark remains, in Tagore's words, where 'the language of stone surpasses the language of man'.

Sthala katha — the legend

Twelve hundred artisans laboured twelve years and could not set the crowning stone; Dharmapada, the master-builder's twelve-year-old son, solved it in a night — then leapt into the sea so the artisans' failure would never be known: Odisha's most cherished legend of sacrifice.
