History & significance

The holy mountain of the Mekong: Lingaparvata's summit is a natural linga, and from the 5th century (pre-Angkorian Shrestapura, among the oldest Indic sites in Southeast Asia) to the Khmer empire, kings built an axial sanctuary climbing toward it, fed by a sacred spring that still bathes the (now Buddhist) shrine. UNESCO-listed in 2001 with its ancient planned landscape.

Sthala katha — the legend

Local tradition remembers a yearly rite in which the mountain-god was honoured with a great buffalo offering by the Lao kings of Champasak — the Indic mountain-linga absorbed into Lao Buddhist festival, still celebrated each February full moon.
